Visiting Speaker November 18 - Dr. John Symons

Dr. John Symons, Professor and Chair in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Kansas, will be giving a talk in our department on November 18. His talk, titled “Dark Laws and Brute Facts” will be held from 2-4pm in McCain Hall, Room 185. His abstract is as follows:

There are limits to what any finite agent can know. What can we know about those limits and how is this knowledge relevant to scientific inquiry in practice? This talk examines the dark laws governing inevitable ignorance and presents the challenge of dealing with brute facts about nature and our own epistemic condition. Inquiry is governed by trade-offs, but these trade-offs can be studied and characterized in an objective manner.

We hope to see you there!
